Overview

Holi, a well-known festival with a mythological background, holds deep ties to Hindu philosophy and spans thousands of years. Its roots are as ancient as the Hindu religion itself.
The festival is observed over a few days in Nepal, marked by water and color festivities. The main celebration is on 24 March 2024. In Nepal, particularly in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and the hilly regions, 24 March and Terai in Chitwan.
Holi, a vibrant festival symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, involves people joyfully splashing different colors on each other. Colors, representing life, breathe vitality into our desires and celebrations. Thus, Holi becomes a jubilation of life, love, and passion.
Modernization has introduced changes to the celebration. In addition to dry colors, water balloons and guns have gained popularity, especially in urban areas. People on rooftops drench passersby with water, transforming the festival into a lively, inclusive celebration extending beyond religious or social boundaries.
The origin of Holi traces back to Hindu Mythology, in the 'Vishnu Purana.' It narrates the tale of King Hiranya Kashyap, who, having gained a boon from Lord Brahma, became a tyrant posing as a god. His son, a devotee of Lord Vishnu, survived multiple attempts on his life, culminating in a fiery encounter with Holika, Hiranya's sister, who was immune to fire. However, she perished, and Lord Vishnu, taking the form of Narasimha, defeated the tyrannical king.
This symbolic victory of good over evil is the essence of Holi, celebrated globally. Holi is an official festival in Nepal and India, causing businesses to close for a day. Citizens gather in the streets to sing, dance, meet friends and family, and share the joy of colors.
